  Stipe - REM Tribute

For all R.E.M (REM) fans out there, if you missed this tribute band at Mr.Kyp’s in August you missed a rich pageant revealed! “Mr.Stipe's” (aka Rick Southern) vocals were spot-on and even less nervously wobbly than Michael Stipe’s own are on occasion. “Man on the Moon” was excellent with just the right amount of Elvis murmurs. There was just a hint of a down side to this as while speaking “Mr.Stipe” was a little too much “deep south” Georgia and not enough generic New York.

The some-what young-looking “Mr.Buck” was fabulous on guitar, as were all the other instrumentalists. The Troggs classic “Love is all around” with “Mr.Mills” in a gorgeous Andy Warhol wig, singing lead and “Mr.Stipe” doing ba-ba’s was loved by the audience. “Everybody Hurts” of course brought the house down – nothing less would have been acceptable. Special credit must go to guest keyboards/guitar-player (aka Peter Nicholls) for the dark gingery wig reminiscent of a slender Jonathon Meades!

And all power to the 70-something-year-old lady boogie-ing next to the stage – may she boogie on into the next century….. Everyone left the club as very shiny very happy people.
