I had never attended a gig before and for once a tribute band's reputation preceded them. I had heard a lot from my friends urging me 'if you like REM you will like these even more '. I was dubious, but at 9:30 I was blown away. The look and the sound were awesome. No-one can sound like Michael Stipe I thought - how wrong could I have been ? Rick Southern's perfect rendition of the REM frontman sent shivers down my spine - amazing. The hand movements and the Megaphone on Orange Crush was sublime. On Guitar was Paul Tonge and with his spasmodic shimmy to the floor kept me hypnotized all night. And a man who look uncannily like Mike Mills on Bass. The shameless dancer in the chinchilla coat is a memory I am never to forget [those who attended will know what I am talking about]. Special notes must be paid to the songs Man on the Moon which even I was dancing along to [and I was the sober one] and Orange Crush. So everybody hurts, but once you have seen Stipe it will hurt that little bit less. Lewis English |
