  Stipe - REM Tribute

There was quite a large crowd attending tonights show by Stipe, the REM tribute band, which considering the recent cold damp miserable weather we've been having, was a pleasant surprise. It must be very difficult to promote shows at this time of year, what with X-Mas and New Year blues making most of us very reluctant to venture from the comfort of our own lounge (or is it just me, turning into Victor Meldrew? I don't believe it!).

Stipe are a 5-piece outfit comprising of frontman, and Michael Stipe soundalike, Rick Southern (who originally formed the band in 1996), Paul Tongue on guitar and mandolin, Tony Williams on Fender bass and acoustic guitar, a very young looking Karl Hand on drums, and Pete Nicholls on keyboards and acoustic guitar (an Ovation?). Together they performed faultlessly, and put in a great set of well known, and lesser well known, tracks.

I felt that it took a few numbers for the audience to warm up, but by the time Daysleeper was performed they were singing along with the band. Other tracks included The One I Love, What's The Frequency Kenneth, a great version of Nightswimming featuring just Rick and Pete, Paul playing mandolin superbly on Losing My Religion, my personal favourite track Orange Crush, Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, and Everybody Hurts. The first encore was Man On The Moon, and for the second they performed Shiny Happy People (with audience member Andrea on backing vocals). Finally, the night was brought to a close with End Of The World. With that, it was back to reality, and out into the miserable January night (oh no, I really am turning into Victor!).
