Congratulations to Stipe for achieving 5 years as The Definitive R.E.M. Tribute Band.

Not an easy task, but as long term and persistent fans we were amongst the lucky few (many of whom also serious fans) who witnessed a very special and intimate performance of R.E.M. songs… many of which they had not played before … including one from the forthcoming album!!

The first half was an acoustic set which fully exposed Rick’s superb voice … and although admittedly nervous … he gave a spellbinding performance which left us all unusually quiet … in awe (I think) ‘cos the audience had gone through plenty beer at this time… and there was more to come. (Beer and songs, that is). Paul is also to be congratulated as his guitar work in all styles was on top form and his skill as a tutor showed when Karl took to the Bass Guitar and played that for the first time with the band. Apparently, it was Karl’s 50th gig with the band too … we were there at the first gig in Kings Lynne … seems like yesterday.

The second set (after a few beers to get strength up of course) was the full on rock we are used to from Stipe. Again on top form … apologies to anyone in the audience I was dancing in front of. Not sure whether we were a fire-risk (have been told that before, but it’s just the blood pressure!) or if we were in the way of the lighting / video etc… but the music is too damn infectious to sit down!! Rick apologised for us not being able to dance up front and then made us suffer by playing more and more dance stuff. We all literally danced on the steps and the aisles instead!!

I was dubious about the venue as I normally prefer to stand and dance … BUT the atmosphere was very friendly and it suited the gig well. We will certainly go if they play there again, and full marks to the venue for going out to re-stock the beer during the night.

I haven’t added a set list … as my memory is awful!! … but if you missed it, you must put your name down to pre-order the DVD. Carmen (Paul’s lovely Partner) professionally recorded the whole concert, so that will be a something to look forward to. Our name is on the list, and we are very keen to see it.

Keep it up … you deserve more rewards and recognition … hope it comes in the future, and from a wider audience.

Thank you Stipe, and to all the family and friends who help them to put on the gigs… (The unsung heroes!!)
