This was the third time we’ve been to see Stipe but the first time on a “proper” stage. Having first heard about them through a TV show about the Limelight Club it seemed appropriate to actually see them perform here. The club was busy and there was a good atmosphere with lots of people dancing, joining in with the old favourites and shouting out requests. Each time we have seen them play the set list has varied considerably. The standard “every night” songs get played - there would probably be a riot if they didn’t play “Losing My Religion or “Man on the Moon” – but there have also been a few of the early or lesser known songs as well, so their shows offer something to appeal to REM fans of every level. The surprise at this show was “In The Sun”, the first time they had ever played it. Not actually an REM song as it was written by Joseph Arthur, the link to REM being that Michael Stipe recorded the song to raise funds for the victims of hurricane Katrina. It was a really enjoyable evening, nothing matches a really good live performance and these guys certainly deliver that. We have already made plans so see them again within the next few weeks – maybe then the set-list then will include REM’s soon to be released new single? Review by: Jane Kippax |
